The backing pad on a GEM orbital buffer typically attaches using a hook-and-loop (Velcro) system. The pad driver, which is part of the buffer, has a grippy face (often dark colored) that corresponds with the hook and loop on the backing pad. To attach the pad, you simply align the pad with the driver and press it on, ensuring it's properly centered.
